Calling Kent Artisans

dennis_berry_glass.jpgIn the short time since the Charlton Art Centre opened in Dover we have been amazed by the amount of craftspeople and designer-makers we have met, all of whom have great talents and ideas.  Individually they are one voice talking about their hopes and plans - bring these voices together and we can shout!

For this reason White Nave are preparing to set up the Kent Artisans group - open to all crafts people and designer-makers, whether their craft is traditional or contemporary.  We aim to support this group by providing a focus for artisans in Kent and a forum from which we can develop together.  Perhaps more importantly, this group will provide a collective voice when approaching funders, local authorities, etc

The initial benefits we are offering members are:

  • A bi-monthly meeting for networking and planning
  • Pages on the White Nave website to promote the group with links to individual profiles (and their websites if they have them)
  • Online Gallery space from which White Nave can sell work on your behalf*
  • "Spotlight on..." online feature articles on individual members
  • Rotating display of members' work in White Nave's project space within the Charlton Art Centre**
  • Free pitch at the White Nave annual Craft Show (bi-annual if proves popular)
  • Opportunities to run demonstration workshops for the local community in Dover
  • Opportunities to take part in White Nave community projects
  • One-to-one meetings, by request, for informal business advice
  • Opportunity to purchase a low-cost, off-the-shelf website package***

For these initial benefits we are setting our membership fee as low as possible - at just £10 per month; fees will go towards administration, research and meeting costs.

sue_daniels_gourds.jpgIn the future we plan to run low-cost business workshops and guest speaker events to enhance your business skills.

We are currently exploring possibilities to find a site to house a cluster of affordable workshop/retail spaces in the Dover District area - the benefits of clustering units like this are obvious, for example:

  • Retail Focus - potential customers are more likely to visit a group of outlets, whether they are specifically looking for craftwork or simply an afternoon out
  • Peer Support - sharing knowledge and solving problems together
  • Collective Voice - again, groups have a more powerful voice

We need to prove to the 'powers that be' that there is a need for this in Kent - join us to make our voices heard!
