Artists and art lovers came together at White Nave's Kentish Tea Party to celebrate the opening of the latest exhibition at the Charlton Art Centre - 'OPEN 08'

Over 100 people attended the event to enjoy the works of Kent artists in this open-themed exhibition and to celebrate with a cup of real Kentish Pluckley Tea generously supplied by the Kent Tea and Trading Company.  Standing 'centre stage' in the gallery were tables groaning under the weight of an array of cakes made by artists and supporters including one donated by bespoke cake-makers Simply Cake! of Dover.

36 Kent artists have submitted works for the OPEN 08 exhibition which will run until 11th July.  There are 157 works on display, all of which are available for purchase.

Embarkation - Dover Arts Development (DAD)

embarkation_dad.jpgThe latest DAD Photography Commissions 07/08 image "and thereby hangs a tale" by Laura J Padgett went up on the 10 freestanding signboards in Dover town centre last week.

Laura J. Padgett's photo and text image was produced as part of her residency with Dover Arts Development. During her residency which took place from 17 - 29 March, Laura spent time researching at the Port of Dover, talking to people in the town and listening to their stories.

Dover Arts Development would like to thank everyone who contributed to the project's research and also Rachael Daniels of White Nave for facilitating Laura's work at the Port. DAD Photography Commissions 07-08 invites artists to spend two weeks in Dover to research and produce a single large-format photographic image informed by the town.

DAD Photography Commissions 07-08 is part of Embarkation, Dover Arts Development's major programme of visual arts for Dover Town and District. It has been made possible by £85k from Arts Council England, South East and the European Union through the Interreg IIIA programme as well as the generous support of Dover businesses and public agencies.

London Biennale 2008

david.jpgLondon Biennale Director David Medalla invited White Nave to contribute in this years’ events programme which is to be launched in Paris, France on May Day.  Rachael Daniels and White Nave Artists' Fulcrum members joined LB artists in Paris to launch 'The Walls in Three Places' exhibition, White Nave's contribution to the Biennale and in which several LB artists have works displayed.  The Biennale moved to its London venues on 13th May and will end with a finale event on Brighton seafront on 31st August 2008.

The London Biennale has been running bi-annually for eleven years and is directed by artists David Medalla and Adam Nankervis (also Director of Museum Mann). David Medalla says:

“It has evolved into an artist community loosely based around London and the biennial events that take place there. Totaling over 300 artists, the Biennale organisation is not restricted to London, playing an active part in international events such as Changing Channels season (2003) in Berlin”.

Talk Time - Your Dover 4 June 2008 - Interview with Marjika Cox

talk_time_2.jpg1. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

I was born in Canterbury and have lived in Kent for most of my life.  I have worked in the arts for over 8 years and have been involved in arts management since 2002.  I moved to Dover last year when my mother, Sue, and I founded the White Nave community interest company - set up to provide support for artists and to bring art to the heart of communities in Kent.

2. What is the Charlton Art Centre and why was it set up?

Charlton Art Centre has been created by property group Targetfollow, which owns the Charlton Shopping Centre and is committed to encouraging and supporting art in local communities.  We have entered into an agreement with the group to manage, in partnership, the day to day running of this new arts space in Dover.

3. What is your role within the centre?

Although we have no funding as yet and will not receive any payment for our services in the Centre, we have a large project space within the Centre at a reduced rent.  This space will provide a base for our Artists' Fulcrum membership group that supports graduated fine artists and will enable us to deliver our planned community workshops and projects that respond to local needs, interests and cultures.  Despite the lack of funds, this was an opportunity for Dover that we could not pass on.

4. What do you think it will bring to Dover?

There is a plethora of research on the positive effect the arts have on social cohesion and economic success and regeneration - however economic, social and environmental regeneration are all about communities; they are about life lived at a local level.  Art is a great communicator; it is open to all and will help Dover's communities develop a sense of belonging and ownership of the town's exciting regeneration plans.
