The Secret Garden of England
It is quite appropriate to write a review of this exhibition whilst drinking in the horizon bar in the middle of the English Channel, la Manche.
The show can be split into two main categories; Escape (includes humour dreams and matter-of-factness) and Protest (includes making art and silence).
For these secret artists, the collaboration with Art Connexion is abundantly important.
They do not fit easily into the categories often thrown at new artists.
The artists need however more opportunities like this and at this level of professionalism if they are to truly discover the joys of making exhibitions.
They need to not simply make works that can be exhibited. They must begin to engage fully in making works which are the exhibition, with new contexts and meanings, engaging audiences more.
The works may be at present a little close to home, and this will change with added support and opportunity.
A second almost back to back exhibition would give the artists the confidence to exploit the conditions of the excellent Art Connexion space.
Artists in this region require continued support such as this from White Nave if they are to adapt and develop their practice. If this represents a start I would say that it is a very good one.
One of the more exciting projects developed within the Euro-region to date.
Peter Fillingham.
British Artist, based in St. Ouen, France.
